"INVISIBLE" - THE ALBUM

The idea for this story first came to me when I started my gig with the Cirque Du Soleil show Totem. It would be the first time in my musical career where I would be heard but not seen. I had never played on “Broadway” style shows where I was in the “pit” with the rest of the band. I am and have always been a rocker. Loud and proud on stage with the band. But for Totem I played my drums and sang from a booth behind the stage.

The music for Cirque shows is there to support for the amazing artists that literally put their lives on the line in the name of entertainment up to 10 shows a week. It ended up being a very special time for not only myself but for my family as well. I wasn’t in the drum booth the whole time either. I got to play guitar and sing a song right on center stage plus go out for a few other small parts. I also became assistant band leader which meant I conducted the band a couple of shows a week.

During down time in my booth I would write music and after a while I started to amass a bunch of riffs, melodies, song ideas, and more. The word “invisible” kept coming to mind. It got me thinking of people that truly have the hard jobs in our world. Or no job at all. The outliers. The ones we all take for granted. The ones we will never know but if they were not there then our lives would not be the nearly the same.

It was at that point I knew I wanted to write a concept record. Something I had never done before. I had the idea and knew it was a concept I wanted to peruse more. I studied, I asked questions, I watched, I listened and learned the best that I could. While this story is fiction, I did draw upon some of my own experiences and sprinkled them in throughout.

The main thing this record did for me is reaffirm my strong belief that we are all here for something. Whether it be small or huge. Whether everyone knows your name or not. We all have a purpose. Find yours.

"MONEY (THAT'S WHAT I WANT)" OFFICIAL VIDEO

A distinctive cover version of the Barrett Strong classic. I wanted my take on it to be dark and brooding with a cinematic sound, so I came up with a way to build an end with chords that kept climbing until a nice climax, while parts for orchestra were arranged that built a great sound on top

Drums, Loops, Vocals: Nick D’ Virgilio
Bass: Jonas Reingold
Main Electric and Rhythm Guitars: Nick D’Virgilio
Keyboards: Phil Naish

A BRIEF STORY ABOUT ME

My name is Nicholas Adam D’Virgilio and this is a condensed version of my story so far. So far because I plan to keep adding to it. If you want to get down to the very detailed variant simply click here ready to read!

I started playing drums at the age of 4 and was self-taught until I attended the Dick Grove School of music at age 17. I joined my first band with my longtime friend Stan Ausmus at the age 15.

In 1995 I met Kevin Gilbert and joined his band THUD and from that moment on my career took off in many different directions. I went on to play for artists like Jonatha Brooke, Genesis, Tears For Fears, Fates Warning, Frost*, and Mike Keneally. Meeting brothers Neal and Alan Morse at a jam night in 1991 led to me combine forces with them, forming the band that became known as Spock’s Beard.  With Spock’s Beard I made 10 studio records, the first six as drummer/back-ground vocalist, and the next 4 as drummer/lead vocalist. I left Spock’s Beard in 2010 and joined the Cirque Du Soleil show TOTEM, playing as drummer, singer, and bandleader for almost 5 years. I became a member of my current band Big Big Train in 2007. Around August 2014 I started working at the music gear retail giant Sweetwater as the studio drummer, also providing masses of web content.

Shortly thereafter, I joined my friends Jonas Reingold and Randy McStine to start The Fringe, a trio which released our debut album in 2016. Along with my friend Stan Ausmus and several of the wonderful musicians working at Sweetwater we formed the band UniKuE, a ukulele-based band which reinterprets progressive rock material from the 70s and beyond, releasing two albums thus far.

After releasing my full-length solo album “Karma” in 2001 and then in 2011 the EP “Pieces”, my sophomore studio album “Invisible” is coming on June 26th, 2020, and it includes collaborations from Tony Levin, Paul Gilbert, Randy McStine, Jonas Reingold, Don Carr and many others.

I have been blessed to participate on a vast myriad of records, and to play thousands of shows with several different bands (you can take a detailed look at them in the music section), while seeing a lot of this amazing planet in the process.

I married my wife Tiffany in 1994 and we have two amazing kids, Sophia and Anthony.
